What Are Some Ways To Reduce Your Risk Of Rodents In Your Attic?

Before you ever see signs of rodents in your attic, it is best to rodent proof it. By rodent proofing your attic, you can ensure that these annoying, and sometimes dangerous, pests never invade your home or family.

Seal Everything in Airtight Containers

One of the first steps in rodent proofing anywhere in your house or storage unit is to pack everything in sealed containers. Look for airtight, plastic containers that rodents cannot penetrate. Rodents can make nests out of almost anything, including cardboard, insulation, and linens. Keep as much as you can in plastic containers instead of cardboard boxes because rodents will be able to penetrate the boxes and infest your packed items.

Close Potential Entry Points

Without sealing your attic vents, make sure that any other potential entry points have been sealed with metal mesh and caulking. Mice and rats can squeeze into a space the size of a quarter, so even the smallest crack in your attic walls or flooring should be sealed against rodents. Stuff the hole with steel wool and seal it with caulking. Nail or screw a metal meshed screen over the stuffed hole to ensure rodents cannot penetrate your attic further.

Reduce Foliage Outside

Head outside and look for tree branches, vines, or trellises that rodents could climb to reach your attic. If you notice any of these areas are close to your attic or roof, then consider removing them. Keep compost piles and firewood piles away from your home, and check them for rodents often. Rodents, cockroaches, and other pests may use these piles as prime locations for their nests.
