Identify Areas That Need More Insulation – And Fix Them!

Just when we thought it is Spring – Winter came back with a vengeance! When record lows brought on by arctic fronts sweep the nation, you may wonder what you can do to keep you home warm. We notice cold spots more because cold air rushes inside faster than your heater can warm it up. If you have a small leak, once the weather heats up you may not notice that a room is slightly warmer, but your HVAC system sure will. Rather than sending angry thoughts to the weatherman, take the time to note ‘cold spots’ in your home – and then do something about it!

Heated air can escape from any number of cracks or un-insulated areas of your home, regardless of a home’s age. To track down air leaks in your home, try burning an incense or smoke stick near suspect windows and doors, old ducts, plumbing accesses, and even electrical receptacles. Not a fan of incense? Another fact about heat? It rises. Properly insulating your attic can solve a lot of heating problems, like keeping your home a consistent temperature during these late-season cold snaps. Depending on where you live, the amount and r-value of attic insulation you need will vary. R-Value measures insulation’s ability to resist heat transfer. Colder climates require higher r-values to compensate for the cooler temperatures, where warm climates need less.

There are also several kinds of insulation. The two most popular and widely used are Blanket insulation and “blown-in”. Blown-in insulation is useful for attics that have unusual builds or hard-to-reach areas. It is also advised for retrofits and locations where it would be difficult to install other types of insulation without damaging walls or existing finishes. The materials that are commonly used are: Cellulose, Fiberglass and Mineral. Blanket insulation is good for attics that are constructed with standard-spaced beams and joists. Blankets and rolls are the most common application of insulation and come in the following materials: Fiberglass, Mineral, Plastic, and Natural fibers.
