The challenge
Old insulation, debris and a hot, stagnant attic
The old layer had compacted and broken up, with debris spread across the attic floor and signs of rodents moving through it. In a Central Valley attic that bakes all summer, insulation in that state does very little for the rooms below.
Heat was the second problem. With nothing moving air through the space, the attic held its temperature long after sunset. So the job was two fixes in one visit: rebuild the insulation from a clean deck, and give the attic a way to breathe.

Protective floor barriers and dust-barrier tunnels set through the work path before any material was moved, so the rest of the house stayed clean.
Remove the old insulation
The existing insulation taken out with a heavy-duty vacuum across 1,450 sq ft, down to bare joists and a clear deck.
Clean and sanitize
Rodent waste, droppings and nests vacuumed out, then OdoBan sanitation applied to neutralize odors, pheromones and bacteria.
Seal and rodent-proof
Entry points closed with wire mesh, polyurethane foam and cement, with two to four indicator traps left as a check. Gaps around fixtures, piping, wiring and vents air-sealed in the same pass.
Improve ventilation
A fan installed to balance attic temperature and humidity, set in place while the attic was open to the joists.
New insulation
New R-38 24in Fiberglass Batts installed across 1,450 sq ft, on a clean, sealed deck rather than on top of the old layer.
