Daylight showed through a hole in the wood in this San Jose attic, and the old grey insulation across its 1,400 sq ft had matted flat. Matted old insulation and an opening to the outside
The old insulation was grey, matted and flattened across the attic floor. At one point the framing had a hole straight through to daylight.
The job started from a clean deck so every opening could be found and closed: the louvered vents, the flue, the gaps along the plates, and the penetrations around fixtures.

Prep and protection
Floor protection and dust barriers set at the access point before any material was moved, so the rest of the house stayed clean.
Remove the old insulation
The existing insulation taken out with a heavy-duty vacuum across 1,400 sq ft, down to a clear, bare surface.
Clean and sanitize
Debris vacuumed from hard surfaces, then OdoBan sanitation applied to neutralize odors and bacteria.
Seal and rodent-proof
Entry points closed with wire mesh, polyurethane foam and cement, with two to four indicator traps left as a check. Gaps around fixtures, piping, wiring and vents air-sealed in the same pass.
New insulation
New R-38 16in Fiberglass Batts installed across 1,400 sq ft, on a clean, sealed surface rather than on top of the old layer.

The attic finished with the old insulation removed, the deck cleaned and treated with OdoBan, foam along the plates and around fixtures, wire mesh over the vents and around the flue, rodent proofing with mesh, foam and cement, and new R-38 16in fiberglass batts across all 1,400 sq ft.
