The old layer had compressed and gathered dust and debris over the years. Around the vents and where the ducts passed through, the openings were unscreened.
The job started from a clean deck so the crew could seal those openings properly and put down one even new layer.

Droppings, nests and debris vacuumed out, then OdoBan sanitation applied to neutralize odors and bacteria.
Seal and rodent-proof
Entry points closed with wire mesh, polyurethane foam and cement, with two to four indicator traps left as a check. Gaps around fixtures, piping, wiring and vents air-sealed in the same pass.
New insulation
New R-38 24in Fiberglass Batts installed across 1,920 sq ft, on a clean, sealed deck rather than on top of the old layer.
