The challenge
Severe rodent activity above and below the house
Up top, the old attic layer was a mix of loose pink fill and yellow batts, broken up and scattered between the framing. Below, the crawl space soil was bare, with debris across it. The record puts rodent activity at severe, so both levels needed full cleanup, not a top-up.
The routes in had to close too. Pipes and a duct run through the subfloor, and each penetration needed its gap sealed, as did openings at the foundation. New insulation laid before that would have left the way in open.

Prep and protection
Protective floor barriers and dust-barrier tunnels set through the work path before any material was moved, so the rest of the house stayed clean.
Remove the old insulation
The existing insulation taken out with a heavy-duty vacuum, down to a clear, bare surface.
Clean and sanitize
Heavy rodent waste, droppings and nests vacuumed out, then OdoBan sanitation applied to neutralize odors, pheromones and bacteria.
Seal and rodent-proof
Entry points closed with wire mesh, polyurethane foam and cement, with two to four indicator traps left as a check. Gaps around fixtures, piping, wiring and vents air-sealed in the same pass.
Air duct replacement
Air ducts removed and replaced to code, matching the existing diameters.
New insulation
New R-38 16in Fiberglass Batts installed, on a clean, sealed surface rather than on top of the old layer.
Crawl space and vapor barrier
Crawl space cleaned and insulated to the same standard as the attic. A new reinforced vapor and moisture barrier laid over the soil and sealed at the piers and perimeter.
The result
Attic and crawl space rebuilt from clean surfaces
Floor barriers and dust-barrier tunnels went down first. All existing insulation came out with a heavy-duty vacuum, rodent waste, droppings and nests were vacuumed out, and OdoBan was applied. Gaps were closed with wire mesh, polyurethane foam and cement, with 2-4 indicator traps left as a check. The crawl space was cleaned, insulated and covered with a reinforced vapor barrier sealed at the piers and perimeter, air ducts were removed and replaced to code at the existing diameters, and new R-38 16in fiberglass batts went into the attic last.
