The attic held a mix of old material: grey loose-fill across the floor, with older batts on top of it, caked with dust and pulled out of place.
Layers like that are hard to judge and hide the gaps underneath. The crew took both out to bare boards, so the deck could be cleaned and the openings sealed before one even new layer went in.
