The challenge
Grey loose-fill packed around the ducts
The before photos show old grey loose-fill settled between the joists, with duct runs and wiring lying in it and debris scattered through the layer.
Sealing and new insulation both need a clean deck, so the old material had to come out first. That exposed the junction boxes, the gaps along the framing and the vent openings, which were closed before the new batts went down.
