This Sherman Oaks attic, in ZIP 91403, had old kraft-faced batts torn and buried under debris, with wiring and pipes running through them. Torn old batts under a layer of debris
Before-work photos show the old faced batts ripped open and covered in grit and debris, with conduit, copper pipe and a junction box lying across them.
Laying new insulation over that would have trapped the debris, and the gaps around every pipe and box, underneath it. The job had to start from bare ceiling boards.

Clean and sanitize
Debris vacuumed from hard surfaces, then OdoBan sanitation applied to neutralize odors and bacteria.
Air sealing
Gaps around fixtures, piping, wiring and vents air-sealed.
Air duct replacement
Air ducts removed and replaced to code, matching the existing diameters.
New insulation
New R-38 16in Fiberglass Batts installed, on a clean, sealed surface rather than on top of the old layer.
The result
Back to the boards, sealed, and reinsulated
Protective barriers went down through the work path first. All existing insulation came out with a heavy-duty vacuum, the attic was cleaned and sanitized with OdoBan, and the service area was rodent-proofed with wire mesh, polyurethane foam and cement, with 2-4 indicator traps left as a check. Gaps around fixtures, piping, wiring and vents were foamed shut, air ducts were removed and replaced to code, matching the existing diameters, and new R-38 16in fiberglass batts went in last.
