The challenge
An old loose-fill layer, old ducts, and walls to insulate
Photos taken before work show the attic floor under a layer of old pink loose-fill, uneven and mixed with debris, and duct runs crossing the space on top of it.
The job covered more than the floor: 975 sq ft of attic plus 300 sq ft of walls. The old material had to come out and the attic had to be cleaned and sealed before any new insulation went in, and the air ducts were part of the same scope.

Remove the old insulation
The existing insulation taken out with a heavy-duty vacuum, down to a clear, bare surface.
Clean and sanitize
Debris vacuumed from hard surfaces, then OdoBan sanitation applied to neutralize odors and bacteria.
Seal and rodent-proof
Entry points closed with wire mesh, polyurethane foam and cement, with two to four indicator traps left as a check. Gaps around fixtures, piping, wiring and vents air-sealed in the same pass.
Air duct replacement
Air ducts removed and replaced to code, matching the existing diameters.
New insulation
New R-38 24in Fiberglass Batts in the attic and R-19 16in in the walls installed, on a clean, sealed surface rather than on top of the old layer.
The result
A clean deck, new ducts, and new insulation floor and walls
Protective floor barriers went down through the work path. All existing insulation came out with a heavy-duty vacuum, the attic was cleaned and sanitized with OdoBan, and the service area was rodent-proofed with wire mesh, polyurethane foam and cement, with 2-4 indicator traps left as a check. Gaps around fixtures, piping, wiring and vents were air-sealed. Air ducts were removed and replaced to code, matching the existing diameters, and new R-38 24in batts went onto the floor, with R-19 16in batts in the walls.
