A hole through the wood with daylight behind it turned up in this 1,071 sq ft San Jose attic, where the job record marks rodent activity as severe. The crew took everything back to bare deck, meshed and foamed the openings, and installed new R-38 and R-19 batts.

The challenge
Heavy rodent waste and a way in from outside
The old insulation held heavy rodent waste, droppings and nests. At that level of contamination the material cannot be cleaned in place; it has to come out so the deck underneath can be cleaned and sanitized.
One photo shows a hole through the wood with daylight on the other side, and the vent and flue openings were screened with wire mesh. Every route in had to be closed before any new insulation went in.

The service
What the crew did, in order
Prep and protection
Protective barriers laid through the work path before any material was moved, so the rest of the house stayed clean.
Remove the old insulation
The existing insulation taken out with a heavy-duty vacuum across 1,071 sq ft, down to a clear, bare surface.
Clean and sanitize
Heavy rodent waste, droppings and nests vacuumed out, then OdoBan sanitation applied to neutralize odors, pheromones and bacteria.
Seal and rodent-proof
Entry points closed with wire mesh, polyurethane foam and cement, with two to four indicator traps left as a check. Gaps around fixtures, piping, wiring and vents air-sealed in the same pass.
New insulation
New R-38 16in Fiberglass Batts and R-19 16in faced installed across 1,071 sq ft, on a clean, sealed surface rather than on top of the old layer.
The result
1,071 sq ft cleared, sealed and reinsulated
The old insulation came out with a heavy-duty vacuum, heavy rodent waste, droppings and nests were vacuumed out, OdoBan was applied, the flue and vent openings were screened with wire mesh, gaps along the framing and around fixtures were sealed with polyurethane foam, and new R-38 16in batts and R-19 16in faced batts were installed last.
